A
child with V.I. at school
The primary choice for each
child of V.I. in Finland is the local school. Local schools do not have special classes
for V.I. pupils.
There are two state subsidized schools for the V.I. in Finland:
-
Jyväskylä School for The V.I. (residensial school and support center for
integration for Finnish speaking population)
-
Swedish Speaking School for The V.I. in Helsinki (School and support center for
integration for Swedish speaking population)
The role of the Jyväskylä school has been set by the Ministry of
Education as follows:
- to provide a special school placement with board and lodging for children with
visual impairment from all over Finland
- to act as a national pedagogic center and offer supportive services for
the children with visual impairment
The school provides:
- education and rehabilitation from pre-school to the end of secondary
education with accommodation and leisure time activities
- supportive consultation for pupils in local
comprehensive schools and senior schools
- regional tutoring and special courses for pupils, teachers and key workers.
In Jyväskylä school the blind, partially sighted and multi-disabled pupils all
study in accordance with the national laid-down curricula.
An IEP (Individual Education
Plan) is drawn up for each child.
The pupils study according to their abilities in an environment that
enhances growth and development.
